Remember Pearl Harbor Tour
Upon arrival, your first stop will be at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. The interpretive wayside exhibits, personal memorabilia, historic photos, and replicas will provide a vivid look into the past. In Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater, you will see an incredible documentary which includes actual footage of the December 7, 1941 attack on Oahu by Japanese aircraft.
As you approach the pristine USS Arizona Memorial via a Navy operated boat, remember the 1177 crewmembers who call the sunken battleship their final resting place. You will have ample time to appreciate the Entry, Assembly and Shrine rooms of the USS Arizona Memorial. The USS Arizona had refueled the day before the attack and continues to slowly seep up to 9 quarts of oil, the “Black Tears of the Arizona,” into the harbor each day. You will be able to see the oil dissipate into iridescent patterns on the surface of the water.
The USS Missouri won 11 battle stars for service in World War II, the Korean War and the Persian Gulf War before taking up permanent residency at Pearl Harbor in 1998. As you traverse the 5 decks, your tour guide will amuse you with stories of the “Mighty Mo,” the last battleship ever built by the United States. While standing on Surrender Deck, envision the signing of the treaty that ended WWII and General Douglas MacArthur declaring “Let us pray that peace be now restored to the world and that God will preserve it always. These proceedings are closed!”
Cemetery of the Pacific
After a memorable day at Pearl Harbor, relax in air conditioning as your tour continues to “Puowaina,” the Hawaiian name for Punchbowl. The most common translation, “Hill of Sacrifice,” is appropriate being that the crater is the location of the Punchbowl National Cemetery. Lady Columbia appears to be watching over the burial place of those who have served in the United States military, including the Pearl Harbor casualties.
Learn more about Hawaii’s history as your guide points out landmarks such as the Hawaii State Capitol Building, ‘Iolani Palace, and the King Kamehameha Statue. The tour will stop briefly at the bronze sculpture, the most photographed statue in Hawaii.
