Meet One of Nature’s Most Infamous predators

For 350 million years, sharks have swum the earth and sought out their prey. Before the dinosaurs every set foot on earthen shores, sharks lurked in the murky depths of the ocean. On the North Shore Shark Adventures tour, you will be introduced to the Sandbar and Galapagos sharks. If you are really lucky, a Tiger shark may make an appearance.

Oahu Shark Cage

According to an ancient Hawaiian legend, every Hawaiian island was given a shark god to look over it. Kamohoali’i, the king and the shark god of Oahu, was known for being a fearsome man who could transform from a shark to a man at will. He lived in a deep, underwater cave near modern Pearl Harbor and was the older brother of the fire goddess, Pele. Many families had a personal guardian spirit that was a shark. In honor of their ‘Aumakua guardian spirit, the family built a shrine called a Heiau on their land.

Despite their belief that the each island had a shark god, the ancient Hawaiians still hunted sharks. Shark teeth are exceptionally good for making arrows and weapons. The meat was eaten, and shark skin was transformed into the top of drums. Today, shark hunting is still legal as long as it is done in federal waters and according to the current regulations.

Primal Experience: Swimming With the Terror of the Deep

The first tour of the day starts at 7 AM for most of the year. From June until August, we begin the first tour at 6 AM. Our other tours are available up until 11 AM although later tours can be arranged as needed. Once your tour starts, you will speed out of Haleiwa Harbor for two hours of exhilaration. Our boats are designed with canopies and cushioned seats, so you can experience the adrenaline rush of a lifetime in complete comfort.

To make sure that everyone stays safe, we start out each tour with a safety briefing and a history of the tour. Afterward, masks and snorkels are handed out. From there, we travel about three or four miles from the shoreline to moor the cage in the serene, clear blue water. The visibility is amazing in this area, so you can see up to 150 feet away as the sharks loom in the deep ocean.

On average, the sharks that you will see will range in size from 5 to 15 feet. Up to eight people can fit inside the cage, so your entire family can see the sharks at once. Since the sharks are interested in the sound of the motor, we do not have to use any chumming to get the sharks interested. Pack your underwater camera or buy one on the trip to photograph the sharks up close.

Featured on BBC Outdoors, the Travel Channel and many other shows, North Shore Shark Adventures are one of the most unusual experiences you can have in Hawaii. Whether you have a fear of sharks or are fascinated by them, you will enjoy the one-of-a-kind experience of being within a shark cage. Some people swim with dolphins, but true adventurers swim with the sharks!
